The city and the IT revolution - By Antonino Saggio

By Antonino Saggio

We're talking about an IT revolution. So, it's hardly surprising if the differences between a "second wave" city - as Alvin Toffler would define it - and a "third wave" or "information" city are very great. Indeed, the city is the biggest and most complex artifact created by humanity, as a system for accelerating its productive capacity. Consequently, the transition from an urban structure based on the manufacturing industry to one based on the organization, diffusion, and formalization of information brings with it profound changes.

In its formative logic, the industrial city incorporated the logic of Taylor's organization of work. This translated into choices - both organizational and physical.
